Scaling Up Geotechnical Consulting

As a self-employed sole practitioner in the field of geotechnical, GIS, and structural consulting, our client Jorge Ibarra Pérez is no stranger to the complexities and demands of handling multiple projects simultaneously. Working mainly for consulting firms, he often undertakes 5-6 jobs per month, each demanding precision, efficiency, and professional expertise.

Before discovering OPTUM G2, our client relied on different software and tools for analysis. Setting up models was a time-consuming process. Every analysis meant tediously setting up models and spending a lot of time making the parameters right.

He was missing essential features and materials e.g., elastoplastic and incremental elastoplastic analysis that were crucial for his tasks and were faced with overall restricted capabilities. Furthermore, the lack of a comprehensive solution meant that he often declined purely geotechnical tasks, focusing more on structural designs.

When the Right Tools Just Click

After discovering a geotechnical training platform, Ingeoexpert, through an online search, Jorge Ibarra Pérez came across Optum’s software solutions. Intrigued by their potential, he enrolled in a four-week course led by Optum’s own experts to deepen his understanding of OPTUM G2. This course proved to be a turning point, giving him the tools to dramatically increase his efficiency and confidently take on more geotechnical projects.

The transformation was immediate.

OPTUM G2’s user-friendly interface made it easy for Jorge to get started, allowing him to feel confident and productive from day one. The software’s versatile features — including limit analysis, incremental elastoplasticity, and mesh refinement — not only accelerated his workflow but also simplified the complexity of daily geotechnical computations.

With powerful calculation tools at his fingertips, determining ultimate loads became a straightforward task, saving time and increasing accuracy. For the first time, Jorge began accepting geotechnical projects he had previously turned down, expanding his service offering and elevating his professional experience.

Throughout the process, the dedicated support from the Optum CE team ensured he was never alone — whether he needed help understanding a feature or guidance with his master’s report, expert assistance was always just a message away.

BENAMOR IRRIGATION RESERVOIR STABILITY

Geotechnical problem solved with OPTUM G2
Image

The slope stability of an irrigation reservoir for agriculture in the south of Spain was assessed. At its highest the reservoir is about 20 meters in height, with an external slope up to 39º. It happened to have some issues due to the low compacity of the upper fill, with DPSH blows as low as 4-5 strokes and Vp around 200-300 m/s.

A series of SR-FELA analyses were performed, varying the value of the apparent cohesion, in order to obtain the corresponding factor of safety. Four cases were checked:

  • Image
    (1) reservoir with the water level at the top
  • Image
    (2) failure of the membrane
  • Image
    (3) Rapid drawdown
  • Image
    (4) Reservoir at a normal level with seismic action
  • It was found that the most critical scenario was membrane breakage, therefore it was proposed to check its integrity among other actions like increasing the vegetation cover and monitoring.

All the analysis was done with OPTUM G2 which proved to be very reliable and efficient.
